On the evening of Oct 15, a minibus collided with a LeShuttle vehicle shuttle train at the Coquelles Eurotunnel terminal in Pas-de-Calais, injuring 19 people. Eurostar says Paris–London passenger services are unaffected; prosecutors have opened a judicial investigation.
Why it matters
The Channel Tunnel is the vital transport artery linking Paris and London. The operator says this is the first incident of its kind at the loading platform. Vehicle shuttle services were briefly suspended, but Eurostar passenger trains between Paris and London were untouched — a distinction that matters to travellers.
Full report
On Thursday evening, Oct 15, a minibus carrying heavy goods vehicle drivers collided with a departing LeShuttle vehicle shuttle train on a loading dock at the Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, France.
According to the prefecture's tally reported by TF1info, 19 people were injured, including the driver; no deaths were reported and most victims were said to be without life-threatening conditions. Some of the injured were flown to Lille by medical helicopter.
Emergency teams deployed ambulances, medical helicopters and firefighters; LeShuttle vehicle shuttle services were suspended for about 90 minutes before gradually resuming. In its Oct 16 traffic update, Eurostar stressed that none of its Paris–London passenger trains were involved and services run as scheduled, while advising travellers to check the status of their own departure.
Prosecutors in Boulogne-sur-Mer have opened a judicial investigation on suspicion of unintentional injury to establish how the minibus struck the shuttle; operator Getlink says this is the first incident of its type at the tunnel's loading platform.
