Paris Student Protests Return October 22: Banned March Route Stands, Daytime Metro Closures, Curfew Extension Undecided

· N GLOBE

Paris police have banned an October 22 student march from Pitié-Salpêtrière to Bastille, closing several metro stations during the day, while it remains unclear whether the nighttime curfew will be extended beyond its third night.

Why it matters

Paris has been gripped by a wave of student protests for weeks. October 22 brings another daytime mobilization during the school holidays, and whether the nighttime curfew gets extended will decide if downtown life returns to normal this week.

Today's developments

High school and university students had planned to march on October 22 from Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital to Place de la Bastille, but the march has been banned by the Paris police prefecture. Unpermitted gatherings were also banned in certain districts from 8 a.m. During the day, several metro stations were closed, including Bastille, Place d'Italie, Saint-Paul, Saint-Marcel, Quai de la Rapée, Gare d'Austerlitz (line 5), Bréguet-Sabin and Chemin-Vert, and line 10 was not running between Gare d'Austerlitz and Jussieu.

After three curfew nights, extension undecided

On the evening of October 21, RATP closed République, Châtelet, Les Halles and Châtelet–Les Halles stations from 10 p.m. at the prefecture's request (affecting RER lines A, B and D), alongside an 11 p.m.–6 a.m. curfew around Place de la République and Les Halles. It was the third consecutive night under curfew, and whether the measure will be renewed beyond October 22 remains undecided.
