Paris police ban Urgence Palestine rally on October 7 anniversary, citing serious public-order risk

Paris police prefect Patrice Faure banned the October 7 rally called by the pro-Palestinian collective Urgence Palestine, at the interior minister's request, citing a serious risk of public disorder; the collective says it will appeal.
Why it matters
October 7 marks three years since the Hamas attacks on Israel, and commemorations organized by Jewish community associations are taking place across Paris today. The prefect's order sets up a direct confrontation between the authorities and the pro-Palestinian collective, which says it will challenge the ban in court.
Full report
Paris police prefect Patrice Faure announced on X on Tuesday that he was banning the rally called for Wednesday by the pro-Palestinian collective Urgence Palestine, held under the slogan "against the genocide in Gaza and for respect of the ceasefire". The order was taken at the request of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
The prefect cited a high terrorist threat and antisemitic acts remaining at a historically high level in France — 53% of all recorded antireligious acts nationwide, according to the order — arguing that such a demonstration on this date posed a serious risk of public disorder. The order also notes that several commemorations were being held in Paris under the auspices of Jewish community associations, and judges that the rally could be perceived as a provocation by the Jewish community.
The procession was to gather at 6:30 pm and set off at 7:00 pm from Château-Rouge metro station toward place Jules-Joffrin in the 18th arrondissement, with an expected arrival at 9:00 pm. The collective told Agence France-Presse it would file an appeal with the administrative court, denouncing "political censorship" and a "grave attack on freedom of expression and the freedom to demonstrate", and saying that for Palestinians October 7 marks "the beginning of the genocidal offensive on Gaza".
