Paris police impose overnight curfew around Place de la République and Les Halles, 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

After Prime Minister Lecornu ordered "very limited, localized" curfews, the Paris Préfecture de Police on the evening of October 19 issued decrees: a curfew from 11 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. tomorrow around Place de la République (10th/11th arrondissements) and nearby blocks, plus a ban on undeclared gatherings from 8 p.m. around the Élysée, Champs-Élysées, Les Halles and six major train stations. The trade minister says at least 3,000 businesses have been damaged or looted.
Why it matters
This is Paris's first localized curfew since cost-of-living protests on October 17 escalated into nationwide disorder. The prime minister ordered "very limited, localized" curfews, and the Paris police prefecture drew the curfew ring around Place de la République — one of the areas with the heaviest clashes in recent days.
Full report
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu held an interministerial emergency meeting on the morning of October 19 and then asked prefects across the country to impose "very limited, localized" curfews. That evening, the Paris Préfecture de Police issued two decrees: first, a curfew — from 11 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. tomorrow, entering or remaining in the area around the central traffic island of Place de la République (Paris's 10th/11th arrondissements) and nearby designated blocks is prohibited; second, a gathering ban — from 8 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. tomorrow, undeclared gatherings and demonstrations are banned around the Élysée Palace, Interior Ministry, Champs-Élysées, National Assembly/Matignon, Les Halles, the Senate district, Place de la République, Bastille, Place d'Italie, and six major train stations (Gare du Nord, Montparnasse, Austerlitz, Lyon, Est, Saint-Lazare).
The prefecture said the measures aim to protect people and property from violence and looting; residents with proof of address may return home, while merchants, essential workers and emergency services are exempt. The trade minister said at least 3,000 businesses nationwide have been damaged or looted in the unrest.
