Lavrov at UN General Assembly: 'fairer multipolar world' emerging, West clinging to privileges
Russian FM Sergey Lavrov used his UNGA address to accuse the West of clinging to global privileges, defend Russia's war aims in Ukraine and demand an end to US pressure on Cuba and Venezuela.

The timing is notable: he spoke while Russian and Ukrainian officials traded reports of fresh casualties — Kyiv said Russian strikes killed four people Saturday, while Moscow said a Ukrainian drone attack killed three — and as front lines remain largely static.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly's General Debate in New York on Saturday, presenting Moscow's case for what he called an emerging "fairer, multipolar world order" led by the Global South and East.
Lavrov accused a "Western minority" of clinging to centuries-old privileges through brute force, sanctions and double standards, pointing to Venezuela, Iran, Cuba and the Balkans. He invoked the legacy of the Nuremberg Tribunal and accused Western states of undermining the UN-centred international order.
On Ukraine, Lavrov defended Russia's "special military operation" as protecting people in Donbas and Novorossiya, accused European countries of prolonging the war by arming Kyiv, and said Europe was obstructing peace efforts involving the Trump administration. He criticized NATO's activities beyond its traditional area and Germany's push for a bigger military role in Europe.
On the Middle East, Lavrov called for Palestinian statehood, criticized Israel's policies toward Palestinians, and demanded an end to US pressure on Cuba and Venezuela. He also backed India and Brazil for permanent seats on the UN Security Council and called for expanded representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Lavrov held a rare meeting with Germany's foreign minister, according to reports.
Since Russia began the war in 2022, Western analysts have estimated more than 500,000 Russian troops killed and Ukrainian military casualties exceeding 500,000, including as many as 140,000 deaths. Neither side publishes its own figures. The war continues to disrupt fuel, fertilizer and grain shipments worldwide.
