Russian strikes kill 12 in Zaporizhzhia; Zelenskyy slams Trump's Russian diesel deal

Five glide bombs hit residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 12 including three children, a day after Trump announced a deal to buy Russian diesel.
Why it matters
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Russian aerial bombs struck residential buildings in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 12 people — including three children — and wounding at least 14. It is the deadliest single-day toll in four days of escalating Russian bombardment that Kyiv says has killed more than 60 people.
The diesel-deal link
The strikes came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal to buy Russian diesel. Trump said Friday that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by 500,000 tons in November, one million tons "immediately thereafter," and another three million tons "within a short period of time." Kyiv warned the deal would help bankroll Moscow's war. "Today, Russia expressed its thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia," Zelenskyy wrote on X, adding that Moscow reads any easing of pressure as a licence to keep fighting: "different signals are needed."
Background
Russia and Ukraine remain locked in a long-range aerial war more than four and a half years after Moscow's full-scale invasion, and Ukraine says it is struggling to counter escalating Russian bombardments. Trump framed the diesel purchase as a bid to ease high fuel prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections — a sharp reversal of years of U.S. pressure on Moscow over the war. Sources: AP, AAP.
