Samsung projects record $80 billion Q3 profit, fourth straight record on AI memory boom

Samsung projected Q3 2026 operating profit of 107.4 trillion won ($80.17 billion), a nearly nine-fold jump and its fourth straight record quarter, driven by AI memory-chip demand.
Why it matters
Samsung Electronics on October 8 projected its third-quarter 2026 (July–September) operating profit at 107.4 trillion won ($80.17 billion) — a nearly nine-fold jump from 12.17 trillion won a year earlier and the first time any technology company has topped 100 trillion won in a single quarter. It is Samsung's fourth consecutive quarter of record operating profit.
Full report
The estimate came in slightly ahead of the LSEG SmartEstimate of 106.1 trillion won, according to Reuters. Samsung attributed the surge to booming demand for AI chips driving strong memory sales, amid a deepening global memory-chip shortage as AI infrastructure investment outpaces supply growth. Samsung and Micron expect the imbalance to persist into 2028. Third-quarter revenue is expected to rise 127% to 195 trillion won, the company said.
Background
The record figures come with caution signals, all reported facts: Samsung's share price has slumped more than 25% from a record high in June amid concerns about the durability of the AI boom, and analysts have recently trimmed forecasts as the sharply appreciating South Korean won reduces the value of dollar-denominated overseas sales. Analysts expect fourth-quarter profit to grow 8.2% from the third quarter, slowing from 20% sequential growth in Q3, with chip price gains abating. Samsung will release detailed results, including a breakdown by business division, on October 29.
