Why it matters
The municipalities of São Paulo and Salvador published their final schedules on Friday, Oct. 9, for the Monday, Oct. 12 Nossa Senhora Aparecida holiday. The date coincides with Brazil's Children's Day (Dia das Crianças), when large numbers of families are expected to be out.
Municipal administrative offices will close for the holiday and schools will suspend regular classes. Urgent and emergency health services are unaffected: urgency-care units (UPAs), the SAMU mobile emergency service and municipal emergency rooms (Pronto Socorro) will operate 24 hours to ensure continuous care through the holiday.
Waste collection and street cleaning vary by city: some municipalities are suspending household pickup on Monday while others maintain normal routes and selective schedules. State-run Poupatempo citizen-service centres will be closed on Oct. 12, with limited Saturday hours and normal service resuming on Tuesday, Oct. 13; selected shops and malls will open special hours for Dia das Crianças shoppers.
On transport, Salvador's Ferry-Boat will run an extended special timetable for the holiday, and metro and bus systems have set holiday schedules to handle higher passenger flow. Residents are advised to check the latest notices from municipal departments before heading out.
