São Paulo Military Police's new rapid-response battalion BRAvO began patrolling the Northern Zone on 6 October with motorcycle-mounted deployments targeting theft hotspots.

Why it matters

The new BRAvO battalion is the São Paulo Military Police's latest tool against street crime in the north of the capital. Its first week in the city centre and south side produced 34 arrests, and the unit is now being deployed across the city based on daily crime data.

Full report

On the afternoon of 6 October, the BRAvO (Batalhão de Resposta Avançada Operacional) rapid-response battalion began operating in the 5th metropolitan command area of the Northern Zone — including the Vila Maria, Vila Guilherme and Tucuruvi neighbourhoods and major thoroughfares — using motorcycle-mounted patrols focused on theft hotspots.

The unit began operating on 22 September. In its first seven days, deployed in the city centre and the south zone, it checked more than 3,100 people and 1,659 vehicles and made 34 arrests, including eight wanted suspects. Public Security Secretary Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves said deployments are adjusted daily according to crime data so all regions of the city are covered.
