São Paulo final debate: Lula and Bolsonaro clash on living costs and corruption before Sunday runoff

Brazil's final presidential runoff debate was held in São Paulo on Oct 23: Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro traded accusations over living costs and corruption, Bolsonaro apologised for a nine fingers jibe, and broadcast campaign ads are barred from Saturday ahead of Sunday's vote.

Why it matters

Brazil's final presidential runoff debate took place on the evening of Oct 23, with incumbent President Lula and right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro clashing over living costs, insecurity and corruption, Reuters reported. The runoff vote is this Sunday.

The candidates mostly stuck to set themes early on, toning down the personal attacks that marked their only previous debate in the campaign. Bolsonaro apologised after calling Lula nine fingers — Lula lost his left little finger in an accident while working as a lathe operator. Lula demanded a retraction, and Bolsonaro apologised, then asked whether Lula would apologise to Brazilians suffering insecurity and debt.

Unmoderated finale

In the final minutes, with no moderator, the two sought to link each other to fraud involving lender Banco Master: Lula pressed Bolsonaro on alleged links to the bank's jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro, and Bolsonaro questioned Lula about accusations involving his son and a pension fraud. These are debate-stage accusations, not judicial findings.

Under Brazilian electoral law, radio and TV campaign advertising is barred from Saturday, though candidates can still hold rallies until the final hours. Bolsonaro won the first round; Lula is seeking re-election.
