São Paulo's Ceagesp fire-hit traders move into temporary warehouse tents on Oct 16

The 124 traders burned out of pavilion MFE-A at São Paulo's Ceagesp wholesale market on Sept. 5–6 will move into two temporary warehouse tents on Oct. 16. Their sales have fallen about 50%; fees are suspended until the rebuilt pavilion opens in Sept. 2027.
Why it matters
The 124 traders whose businesses burned down in the Sept. 5–6 fire at pavilion MFE-A of Ceagesp, São Paulo's main wholesale food market, will move into two temporary warehouse tents on Oct. 16 — one block from the destroyed pavilion. Their sales have collapsed by about 50% since the fire, according to the traders' commission.
Full report
The temporary structure will have 4,800 square metres — smaller than the original 6,000 m² — but will centralise customer service again, with refrigerated containers and additional bathrooms planned. The tents are under construction a block away from the original pavilion.
Today the traders work improvised under canvas tarps around the burned pavilion, exposed to heat and rain in unsanitary conditions, and the scattered layout hampers truck circulation and the display of goods in neighbouring pavilions. The busy season for fruit trading at Ceagesp runs from November to February, making the move urgent.
The administration has suspended fee collection from the affected traders; they will only resume payments when the definitive pavilion is delivered, expected in September 2027. The destroyed pavilion was one of the oldest of the complex's 52 pavilions — some traders had worked there for more than four decades, continuing family businesses dating back to the 1960s.
What's next
The 124 traders are expected to use the temporary tents until September 2027, when the rebuilt pavilion is scheduled to be completed.
