São Paulo to Allow Election-Day Parking on Normally Prohibited Streets

· N GLOBE

São Paulo's municipal government will exceptionally allow parking on streets marked with R6-a no-parking signs this Sunday, Oct 4, to help voters reach polling stations; bus corridors and expressways remain restricted.

Why it matters

Election-day traffic in São Paulo is notoriously heavy, and parking near polling stations fills up fast. The one-day exception gives voters a legal option on streets that are normally off-limits — but the carve-outs for bus corridors and expressways mean drivers still need to check signs carefully to avoid a fine.

Full report

SÃO PAULO, Oct 2 — São Paulo's municipal government has authorized an exceptional parking allowance for this Sunday's election day: vehicles may park on stretches marked with R6-a "no parking" signs, which are normally prohibited zones.

The measure comes through ordinance SMT/SEMTRA No. 28, published in the city's Official Gazette (Diário Oficial da Cidade) on October 2. The city's transport secretariat says the exception is designed to make it easier for voters to reach polling stations amid a surge in parking demand on election day.

The allowance does not apply everywhere: bus-only corridors, streets with bus lanes and expressways remain off-limits, and normal enforcement continues there. If a second round is needed, the same exception will apply on October 25.
