The 50th São Paulo International Film Festival (Oct 15–29) is showing nearly 400 films; India's blockbuster RRR screens at 5:30pm today, with director SS Rajamouli present to receive the Leon Cakoff Award.

Why it matters

The 50th São Paulo International Film Festival (Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo) is underway, running October 15–29 with nearly 400 films screening across cinemas and cultural venues in São Paulo, marking half a century of the festival.

Today (October 19), India's blockbuster RRR gets a special screening at 5:30pm in the Sala Petrobras at Solar, with director SS Rajamouli attending in person. The festival is presenting him with the Leon Cakoff Award — one of its highest tributes, named after the critic who founded the Mostra in 1977 — for his contribution to world cinema.

Full report

RRR became a global hit after its 2022 release, winning the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song with "Naatu Naatu." Audiences at the screening will also get first glimpses of Mahesh Babu-starrer Varanasi and Baahubali: The Eternal War.

The anniversary edition opened on October 14 with James Gray's new feature Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, plus Kleber Mendonça Filho's new short. Gray also received the Leon Cakoff Award and a retrospective. The two-week festival is one of South America's largest cinema events.
