São Paulo: Flávio Bolsonaro holds Avenida Paulista rally a week before runoff, polls show technical tie

· N GLOBE

One week before Brazil's presidential runoff, Flávio Bolsonaro rallied supporters on São Paulo's Avenida Paulista with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and Mayor Ricardo Nunes; the two candidates face off in tonight's first televised debate as polls show a statistical tie.

Why it matters

Brazil's presidential runoff is entering its final week: PL candidate Flávio Bolsonaro held a major campaign rally on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo on Sunday, October 18, to mobilize support ahead of the October 25 runoff against incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). He was joined by São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes and political ally Nikolas Ferreira.

Full report

The rally was staged ahead of tonight's televised presidential debate — both campaigns confirmed participation in the first direct confrontation of the runoff, at 8 p.m. Brasília time on Band, also broadcast with Estadão, Cultura, Gazeta and Jovem Pan.

The Lula camp chose a low profile to prepare for the debate: the PT's São Paulo state leadership directed the weekend to canvassing peripheral neighborhoods, with volunteers in dozens of districts from Butantã to Campo Limpo; Lula supporters staged a red-shirted mini-marathon on the Minhocão elevated roadway in central São Paulo on Saturday, saying they were defending democracy and minority rights.

Polls show a dead heat: Quaest put Flávio Bolsonaro at 46% and Lula at 44% of valid voting intentions; Datafolha registered 51% for the PL candidate and 49% for the PT candidate — both a technical tie. The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) confirmed both advanced from the October 4 first round with the highest vote totals; runoff voting runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time on October 25.
