Norris Takes Rain-Hit São Paulo Pole as Penalties Reshuffle the Grid

McLaren's Lando Norris took pole position for the São Paulo Grand Prix in a rain-disrupted qualifying session, his third straight pole at Interlagos; George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen all take grid penalties into Sunday's race.
McLaren driver Lando Norris took pole position for the São Paulo Grand Prix in qualifying on Saturday, November 7, setting a time of 1:27.470, 0.204 seconds ahead of Mercedes' George Russell. It is Norris's third consecutive pole at Interlagos, the 20th pole of his career and his fourth of the season. Torrential rain halted qualifying for more than 80 minutes, and a string of grid penalties has reshuffled the order for Sunday's race.
Downpour stops qualifying after two minutes of Q1
Torrential rain struck about two minutes into the first qualifying session, forcing officials to suspend running for more than 80 minutes, with lightning and thunder in the area as darkness approached. When the session resumed, drivers switched from wet tyres to intermediates midway through Q2. Norris mastered the slippery track to beat Russell, taking pole in Brazil for the third year running after also starting from the front in 2024 and 2025.
Penalties promote Antonelli to the front row
Russell was second-fastest but takes a five-place grid penalty for fitting a sixth internal combustion engine, dropping him to seventh; Charles Leclerc takes a 10-place drop for a fifth engine and starts 14th. Lewis Hamilton, 11th in qualifying, starts 20th after Ferrari changed his entire power unit following problems in third practice, while Max Verstappen, 16th in qualifying, takes a 30-place penalty and starts 21st. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli moves up to the front row alongside Norris, Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson rises from fifth to third, and Audi's Nico Hülkenberg starts fourth. Norris is the only driver set to start from the position he qualified in.
Race on Sunday afternoon; Mercedes can clinch constructors' title
The São Paulo Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, at 2 p.m. local time, with light rain forecast and the track expected to stay damp. Mercedes can clinch the constructors' championship at Interlagos if they outscore Ferrari by three points.
