São Paulo metro Line 1-Blue train evacuated after fault, Line 3-Red also slowed

A Line 1-Blue train failed at Parada Inglesa station on Sunday morning, forcing a passenger evacuation; Line 1 slowed and Line 3-Red was also affected, with service restored around 9:45 a.m.

Why it matters

The disruption struck on a high-stakes Sunday: election day, when the entire São Paulo metro and rail network ran fare-free, drawing heavy crowds. The evacuation of a packed train at Parada Inglesa rippled across two of the system's busiest lines during peak morning hours.

It is the latest reminder of how dependent the metropolis is on its aging metro: a single train failure forced system-wide slowdowns on a day when many voters were relying on free transit to reach polling stations.

Full report

SÃO PAULO — A São Paulo Metro Line 1-Blue train suffered a failure at Parada Inglesa station at around 9:10 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, forcing the evacuation of passengers. The train was taken out of service for inspection, and Line 1 ran at reduced speed with longer station stops.

According to the metro's official statement, normal operation was restored at 9:45 a.m. Transport media reported that passengers felt the impact between roughly 9:22 and 9:57 a.m., and that the slowdowns also affected Line 3-Red.

Sunday was the first round of Brazil's presidential election, and the city had made metro and suburban train travel free all day to encourage voting — meaning the network was carrying unusually large crowds when the failure occurred.
