After the Oct 11 pro-Lula rally on São Paulo's Avenida Paulista, demonstrators spray-painted and damaged entrances to the Consolação and Trianon-Masp metro stations; military police confirmed the damage and Trianon-Masp was briefly closed.

Why it matters

On Sunday, Oct 11, the "March for Democracy" rally backing President Lula da Silva's re-election filled Avenida Paulista in São Paulo, with Lula himself speaking on stage ahead of the Oct 25 presidential runoff. During the dispersal, demonstrators spray-painted and damaged entrances to the Consolação and Trianon-Masp stations on metro Line 2-Green. The Military Police confirmed doors and access gates were smashed at Consolação, along with clashes involving station staff, and said the situation was later brought under control.

Full report

Brazilian outlets citing the Military Police report that protesters climbed onto the glass roof of the Trianon-Masp entrance and spray-painted slogans including "Long live the revolution." ViaMobilidade, the metro operator, said Trianon-Masp was temporarily closed around 12:50 p.m. because of the crowd concentration, as part of its crowd-control plan; Consolação also restricted access, disrupting commuters. The operator added extra trains to move the crowds.

Separately, two women reported being assaulted and threatened at the rally — including an activist who said she was punched after arriving with a cardboard cutout of rival candidate Flávio Bolsonaro — with investigations still underway and no suspects identified. Avenida Paulista was also left strewn with rubbish. Lula trails conservative Senator Flávio Bolsonaro by about two percentage points from the first round heading into the Oct 25 runoff.
