Strong rain hit São Paulo on the afternoon of October 14: the Anhangabaú tunnel flooded completely with four people rescued, a landslide in Brasilândia crushed a home killing one person; flooded metro stations resumed service by 19:00.

Why it matters

Strong rain swept Brazil's São Paulo on Wednesday afternoon, October 14, flooding the city centre and triggering a deadly landslide in the northern district, killing one person. The city's emergency weather centre (CGE) issued a citywide flood alert at 15:25, lifted at 17:00; civil defence sent two severe alerts warning of heavy rain, lightning and gusts.

The damage

Downtown, the Anhangabaú tunnel flooded completely, cars piled up and drivers were trapped — firefighters rescued four people. The Bandeira terminal area and the end of Av. 23 de Maio also flooded badly. According to the city, there were at least 17 flood points and 3 collapses across the city.

In Brasilândia in the north, a landslide on Rua Santa Cruz do Monte Castelo crushed a house; the fire service confirmed one death.

Rainfall totals: the CGE recorded 48.5 mm in about 1.5 hours in Sé, up to 67.8 mm around Sapateiro/Ibirapuera in the south; the city said the Anhangabaú creek basin received in 40 minutes the equivalent of 11 days of expected October rain.

Transport impact

Water entered the Japão-Liberdade, Paraíso and Trianon-MASP metro stations, affecting turnstiles and equipment; Metrô and CPTM said all lines were running normally again by 19:00.
