São Paulo to run 40% more buses on election day; Santo André and Mauá announce free fares

Mayor Ricardo Nunes announced on Sept 30 that São Paulo will run 40% more buses on Oct 4, the first-round voting day, with the Sunday free-fare scheme in force. Santo André and Mauá will offer free municipal bus fares all day; Nunes also delivered 245 electric buses.
Why it matters
October 4 is the first round of Brazil's general elections, and getting voters to polling stations is a shared concern for every city hall. São Paulo's buses are already free on Sundays — adding 40% more capacity is essentially trading fleet power for turnout.

São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes announced on September 30 that the city will run 40% more buses than a normal Sunday on October 4, the first-round voting day. Under the 'Domingão Tarifa Zero' programme in place since December 2023, municipal buses are free every Sunday — and the benefit will apply normally on election day.
In Greater São Paulo, the cities of Santo André and Mauá announced the same day that municipal buses will be free all day on voting day; if a runoff is needed, the measure will be repeated on October 25.
At the same event, Nunes handed over 245 electric buses to the city's fleet. The city says electric buses cost far less to run than diesel ones, and the delivery is part of its fleet electrification drive.
