Canadian sovereign AI company Cohere announced on November 3 the establishment of a Defence AI Accelerator in Singapore, designed to help defence organisations and other sovereign customers move AI applications from pilot projects into operational deployment in highly secure environments. Cohere is headquartered in Toronto and positions itself as a provider of AI platforms that let regulated industries and governments own, operate and govern their data and infrastructure. Built for deployment, not display
Cohere says the accelerator is not a traditional technology showcase but a dedicated hub for defence-focused AI innovation: engineers work hands-on with customers to take projects from proof-of-concept to production, letting them experiment with Cohere's models and its agentic AI platform, North, in real-world environments and scale proven solutions into operational infrastructure. Participants get secure environments to develop, test and validate applications for mission-critical use, integration support for existing systems and workflows, on-premises, hybrid and fully air-gapped deployment options, and governance frameworks and administrative controls to manage AI systems securely.
Sovereign AI demand rising across Asia-Pacific
Andrew Chang, Cohere's Vice President of APAC, said governments and enterprises across the region are moving beyond experimentation and looking for trusted partners to deploy agentic AI in secure operational environments. The company cited IDC's expectation that 80% of Asia-Pacific enterprises will prioritise AI sovereignty for mission-critical workloads, with sovereign AI now the region's second-highest government investment priority. The announcement is part of Cohere's plan to quadruple its regional presence by the end of 2027 through new investments, local partnerships and additional offices across Asia-Pacific.
