· N GLOBE

The first sprint race in 17 editions of the Singapore Grand Prix: Max Verstappen won on intermediate tyres after a rain delay; pole-sitter George Russell crashed out on lap 1; the McLarens collided late in the race.

Why it matters

On Saturday afternoon, October 10, the Marina Bay street circuit hosted the 21-lap Singapore Grand Prix sprint — the first sprint race in the event's 17 editions. A heavy downpour about 10 minutes before the scheduled start delayed the race by roughly half an hour, with everyone starting on intermediate tyres.

Full report

Red Bull's Max Verstappen won in 39:48.162, collecting 8 points. Ferrari took second and third: Lewis Hamilton was 2.591 seconds behind, Charles Leclerc 16.871 seconds back.

Mercedes driver George Russell jumped pole-sitter Verstappen at the start to take the lead, but crashed into the wall at the final corner of the opening lap and retired. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) finished fourth; Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson was fifth.

Late in the race, McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided at Turn 5 and both spun; Piastri dropped to 14th and Norris to 8th. Next up: Grand Prix qualifying at 9:00 p.m. local time tonight, with the race at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11.
