· N GLOBE

Singapore's National Environment Agency issued a haze update on Oct 4: moderate to dense smoke plumes from southern Sumatra continue drifting toward Singapore; 24-hour PSI stood at 73-96 (Moderate) as of 5pm, forecast High Moderate to Low Unhealthy.

Why it matters

Transboundary haze is affecting Singapore again. The National Environment Agency (NEA) issued a haze situation update on Sunday, reporting that smoke plumes from southern Sumatra continue drifting toward Singapore and the surrounding region, with smoke haze also observed from fires in Kalimantan. There remains a risk of haze affecting Singapore under the prevailing winds, and sensitive groups should follow the official health advisories.

Full report

NEA said it was dry over Singapore on Sunday. As of 5pm, 1-hour PM2.5 concentration readings were 41-90 micrograms per cubic metre (Band 1, Normal to Band 2, Elevated), and the 24-hour PSI was 73-96, in the Moderate range.

On the hotspot and haze situation, moderate to dense smoke plumes from southern Sumatra continued to drift towards Singapore and the surrounding region, while smoke haze was also observed from fires in Kalimantan. Dry conditions are expected to continue tomorrow; under prevailing southeasterly or southwesterly winds, there remains a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore. The 24-hour PSI for Singapore is forecast to be in the High Moderate to Low Unhealthy range.

Health advisory

If the 24-hour PSI reaches the Unhealthy range, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion; the elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise it; and persons with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it. Refer to the 1-hour PM2.5 for immediate activities and the 24-hour PSI forecast to plan ahead.
