Singapore Haze Returns as Sep 26 PSI Nears Unhealthy Threshold

· N GLOBE

Singapore's 24-hour PSI reached 71–96 at 6pm on Sept 26, with the central region at 96 — nearing the unhealthy threshold — as smoke from Kalimantan and South Sumatra fires drifts over the island, NEA said.

Why it matters

Haze season has returned to Singapore. With the central region's PSI closing in on the unhealthy threshold, vulnerable groups — the elderly, children and those with respiratory conditions — need to prepare, and the forecast offers little immediate relief.

Full report

At 6pm on Sept 26, Singapore's 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) stood at 71–96 — in the moderate range — with the central region recording the highest reading of 96. The one-hour PM2.5 concentration was 46–96 micrograms per cubic metre. The unhealthy range begins at 101; the central region previously hit 154 on Sept 15, its first exceedance since October 2023.

In its Haze Situation Update for Sept 26, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said moderate-to-dense smoke haze from fires in Kalimantan was drifting toward Singapore, while smoke plumes were also observed from fires in South Sumatra. The 24-hour PSI forecast for the following day was in the moderate to low-unhealthy range, with south-easterly to south-westerly winds likely to keep blowing haze toward the island.

NEA added that South Sumatra as well as southern and eastern Kalimantan were expected to remain dry, keeping the haze risk alive.
