Singapore haze worsens: western PSI hits 212 "very unhealthy", outdoor events cancelled

The 24-hour PSI hit 212 in Singapore's west on Saturday night, in the "very unhealthy" band; island-wide readings stayed unhealthy Sunday afternoon, with events cancelled, 16 flights diverted and relief forecast early next week.
Why it matters
Singapore's haze worsened again over the weekend: at 11 pm on Saturday (Oct 17), the island-wide 24-hour PSI stood at 129–212, with the western region at 212 — in the "very unhealthy" band; on Friday the PSI had already climbed to 229, the year's highest. The National Environment Agency says this is the first significant air-quality deterioration in about three years.
Full report
At 5 pm Sunday (Oct 18), the 24-hour PSI remained in the unhealthy range of 112–197 across the island. The impact widened: the Great Eastern Women's Run was cancelled and The Purple Parade postponed to the first half of 2027; ActiveSG sports facilities reopened Saturday but many outdoor activities were cancelled or deferred; Marina Bay Sands suspended some prolonged outdoor activities and offered guests masks and air purifiers. Between Oct 5 and 11, Changi Airport Group and the Civil Aviation Authority diverted 16 flights originally bound for Seletar Airport due to low visibility.
Cause and forecast
The haze comes from wildfire smoke in Indonesia's Kalimantan and Sumatra, carried over by southeasterly winds; the NEA issued preventive notices to seven companies on Oct 16. The NEA forecasts more rain and easing winds on Monday and Tuesday, which should bring relief.
