Indonesia cuts gas exports to Singapore from today; Singapore says impact under 2% of daily demand, supply sufficient

Indonesia is reducing natural gas exports to Singapore starting today (Oct 24) for 18 days; its upstream regulator SKK Migas put the cut at 31 BBTUD, applying to Singapore only. Singapore's Energy Market Authority said the cut is less than 2% of daily gas demand and that energy supply remains sufficient.
Why it matters
About 95% of Singapore's electricity comes from natural gas, and Indonesian pipeline gas is one of its key sources. Jakarta says it is keeping more gas at home for downstream industry; Singapore's regulator calls the impact minor, but the episode underlines the fragility of relying on a single supply source.
Full report
Indonesia's Upstream Oil and Gas Special Task Force (SKK Migas) announced on Friday evening that it will reduce natural gas exports to Singapore starting Saturday (Oct 24), by 16 BBTUD from Sumatra and 15 BBTUD from the Natuna gas fields — 31 BBTUD in total — for 18 days, applying to Singapore only, with exports to other destinations unaffected.
Jakarta said the move follows policy directives to prioritise domestic energy needs and secure feedstock for expanding downstream industries; under Indonesia's domestic market obligations, about 70% of gas production is allocated to domestic consumption and 30% exported.
Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) responded that the reduction amounts to less than 2% of Singapore's total daily gas demand, that the country's energy supply remains sufficient to meet domestic needs, and that importers will take all available steps under their contracts to address the disruption. EMA noted that recent shortfalls of 20 to 100 BBTUD from scheduled and unscheduled facility maintenance were covered by other sources without disruption.
Singapore's gas comes from pipelines in Indonesia and Malaysia as well as liquefied natural gas imported from various countries; the country is also developing solar power and researching nuclear and geothermal energy to broaden its supply base.
