Two mass shootings overnight in South Africa have killed at least 27 people, police said on Sunday. Seventeen people were killed when at least eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire at a bar in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, on Saturday night. Hours later, gunmen killed 10 people at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town. No arrests have been made in either case.

According to the South African Police Service, the Wedela attack began at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police said the gunmen opened fire on people drinking outside the bar before storming inside and continuing to shoot. Thirteen men and four women were pronounced dead at the scene, and 15 others were wounded.
Police said the suspects allegedly searched some patrons and stole their mobile phones before torching two vehicles and fleeing in two unidentified cars. The motive remains unknown.
The second shooting took place at about 1:46 a.m. on Sunday at an entertainment venue in Lwandle township, near Cape Town. Police said five people died at the scene and another five died in hospital; 11 others were wounded.
SAPS has deployed detectives and specialised police units to hunt the suspects, and a multidisciplinary team led by serious-crimes detectives is investigating the Lwandle attack. As of Sunday morning, no suspects had been arrested and no motive had been established for either shooting.
