Fire and police crews responded around 8:30 p.m. Oct. 17 to a large bushfire on the coastal headland at Clovelly, sending smoke across Sydney's eastern beaches. The cause is under investigation.

Why it matters

A large bushfire tore through bushland on the Clovelly headland in Sydney's eastern suburbs on Saturday night, Oct. 17, spreading rapidly through coastal vegetation. The flames and smoke blanketed the eastern beaches, and the Clovelly Bowling Club was placed on edge as firefighters and police rushed to Ocean Street around 8:30 p.m.

What happened

According to the Sydney Morning Herald on Oct. 18, Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service worked through the night to contain the blaze on the headland. Community outlet OnScene Bondi reported no property damage; locals said suspicious fires have occurred in the area recently, and witnesses were urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800-333-000. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.

Fire danger context

The fire followed a total fire ban across greater Sydney and the greater Hunter regions amid extreme heat, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting 37°C in Sydney's west and warning of dry lightning that could spark new fires. Australia has just recorded its second-hottest September on record, which climate scientists attribute to climate change combined with a strengthening El Niño.
