Why it matters

A 32-year-old man who allegedly pulled out a sawn-off shotgun and set a vehicle alight in Dulwich Hill — plunging Sydney's inner west into lockdown — was arrested in Burwood on the evening of October 18 after a three-day manhunt, and charged with seven offences.

Full report

The incident began at about 10:20am on Friday, October 16, when police were called to a car park on Williams Parade in Dulwich Hill over reports of a stolen vehicle. Officers were told a man was armed with a firearm inside the vehicle before allegedly setting it alight. Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze; no injuries were reported. The man then fled on foot and was last seen on Union Street.

Police locked down parts of the area, affecting schools, businesses and residents, with PolAir, tactical police and the police dog squad joining the search. Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald said police believed the man was armed with a shotgun but confirmed no shots had been fired. Three witnesses reported seeing the weapon and said they had been threatened; a nearby baby monitor captured audio of people shouting "he's got a gun".

At about 11:30pm on Sunday, police arrested the man on Burwood Road in Burwood after he allegedly attempted to evade them. He was treated for a minor injury, taken to Concord Hospital under police guard, then to Newtown Police Station, where he was charged with seven offences including possessing a shortened firearm without authority, robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon, acquiring a prohibited firearm while subject to a prohibition order, possessing a housebreaking implement, destroying property, driving a vehicle taken without the owner's consent and driving while disqualified.

The man was refused bail and is due before court on Monday, October 19. According to 7NEWS, the sawn-off shotgun remains missing and police have not ruled out links to organised crime.
