A 35-year-old Sydney man appeared before Downing Centre Local Court on Oct. 8, charged with exit trafficking after allegedly deceiving a woman into travelling to Pakistan and leaving her stranded.

Why it matters

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said on Oct. 8 that a 35-year-old Sydney man appeared before Downing Centre Local Court that day charged with exit trafficking. He allegedly lured a woman he knew to Pakistan on the pretext of a holiday in early 2026, bought himself a one-way return ticket, and left her stranded there permanently. The offence carries a maximum of 12 years' imprisonment.

Full report

Investigators allege the man took possession of the woman's passport and identification documents before leaving Australia. Once in Pakistan, he allegedly purchased his own return ticket without telling her, then informed her days later that she would stay in Pakistan permanently. Her documents were withheld and she was prevented from returning to Australia.

On Sept. 16, AFP investigators executed a search warrant at a Western Sydney home, seizing electronic devices, an airline ticket and identification documents. He was charged with one count of facilitating the exit of another person from Australia by threat, deception or coercion, contrary to section 271.2(1A) of the Criminal Code (Cth), and was granted conditional bail. "Carrying out actions to force or deceive someone to leave Australia is a criminal offence, and the AFP will not hesitate to act and investigate these matters," said AFP Detective Superintendent Luke Needham. The charges are unproven and the man is presumed innocent.
