Sydney man charged over alleged $1.8 million NDIS fraud

Australian Federal Police said on Oct 9 a 36-year-old Sydney man faces 12 counts of dishonestly obtaining a gain from a Commonwealth entity over an alleged sophisticated fraud against the disability insurance scheme.
Why it matters
This is the result of a joint investigation led by the Australian Government Fraud Fusion Taskforce. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) began investigating back in June 2024 after reports of suspicious financial transactions, and charges have now been laid after more than two years — a sign of intensifying enforcement against fraud targeting the disability insurance scheme.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced on October 9 that a 36-year-old Sydney man was arrested at a Sydney police station on Thursday, October 8, and charged with 12 counts of dishonestly obtaining a gain from a Commonwealth entity, contrary to section 135.1(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth), involving about $1.8 million.
The NDIA began the investigation in June 2024 following reports of suspicious financial transactions, with the NSW Crime Commission, the AFP and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission participating.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, including forensic examination of seized electronic devices. The AFP reminded the public to contact the fraud taskforce with any information, or call 000 in an emergency.
