Why it matters

A 56-year-old Sydney man was sentenced by the NSW Local Court on September 30 to an 11-month Intensive Correction Order for threatening to kill an Australian high office holder, plus a two-year Community Correction Order with 75 hours of community service for weapons offences. The Australian Federal Police says the case grew out of its National Security Investigations teams, set up in October 2025 to target individuals threatening high office holders and federal parliamentarians.

Full report

The AFP's National Security Investigations (NSI) team began investigating in February 2026 after reports of threatening phone calls directed at an Australian high office holder. That month, investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Macquarie Fields, in Sydney's south-west, seizing three gel blasters, a pair of metal handcuffs and electronic devices.

The man, 56, had pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service to threaten to kill under the Criminal Code (Cth), two counts of possessing an unauthorised firearm and one count of possessing a shortened firearm without authority under the Firearms Act (NSW), and one count of possessing a prohibited weapon without permit under the Weapons Prohibition Act (NSW).

He received an 11-month Intensive Correction Order for the threat offence and a two-year Community Correction Order, including 75 hours of community service, for the weapons offences.
