· N GLOBE

The Parramatta Local Court on Oct 16 sentenced a 44-year-old Sydney man to a two-year Community Corrections Order and a $1,000 fine, plus counselling; he had pleaded guilty over threatening phone calls made to the office of an Australian high office holder.

Why it matters

Threats against Australia's high office holders and federal parliamentarians have been rising, prompting the Australian Federal Police to set up dedicated National Security Investigations teams last October. This is another conviction from that effort, signalling a zero-tolerance stance towards threats against public office holders.

The sentence

The Parramatta Local Court on Oct 16 sentenced the 44-year-old Sydney man to a two-year Community Corrections Order and imposed a $1,000 fine, also requiring him to participate in counselling. He had pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, under section 474.17(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

The case

The AFP's National Security Investigations team began investigating in December 2025 after reports of threatening phone calls directed at the office of an Australian high office holder. The calls contained multiple threats of violence. Investigators later executed a search warrant at a Greystanes home, seizing electronic devices.

The dedicated teams

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of the National Security Investigations teams in October 2025 to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including those who target high office holders and federal parliamentarians.
