· N GLOBE

More than 100 SES calls in one afternoon; a small tornado in Ulladulla ripped roofs off homes and brought down trees and powerlines.

Why it matters

Severe spring storms are sweeping Australia's east coast. The NSW State Emergency Service fielded more than 100 calls in a single afternoon, with a small tornado on the south coast the most dramatic damage.

Full report

A powerful thunderstorm system swept across southern and central coastal New South Wales on Saturday, October 3. By 5 p.m. the NSW SES had received more than 100 calls for help; its busiest units included Ulladulla, Albury, Culcairn, Goulburn and Queanbeyan. In the town centre of Ulladulla on the south coast, a small tornado prompted about 30 calls — several homes lost roofs, and trees and power poles came down. Authorities reminded residents to stay at least 8 metres away from fallen powerlines. The SES issued two advice-level warnings for Greater Sydney, the Central Tablelands, the South Coast and the Central West, warning of possible flash flooding, destructive winds and large hail, with isolated rainfall up to 100 mm. The Bureau of Meteorology issued severe thunderstorm and damaging wind warnings for central and eastern NSW, including Sydney, urging motorists never to drive through floodwater.
