Sydney's Oxford Street to become the city's biggest outdoor arts stage with a free 40-hour festival this weekend

The City of Sydney announced a three-day free arts festival on Oxford Street from October 23 to 25: disco, drag, light installations and art exhibitions across 40 hours.
Why it matters
Oxford Street was once Sydney's most iconic cultural strip but has endured a difficult stretch. Turning it into "Sydney's biggest outdoor arts stage" is the most symbolic step of the City's revitalisation plan — and this weekend, 40 hours of free events give residents a reason to rediscover it.
Full report
The City of Sydney has announced that Oxford Street will become Sydney's biggest outdoor arts stage from Friday October 23 to Sunday October 25, hosting a three-day weekend of free art, culture and creativity totalling 40 hours.
The program spans a disco-themed opening party, drag performances, dance, light installations, art exhibitions, workshops and roving entertainment. Friday evening's opening event will close Bourke Street at Taylor Square to traffic, transforming it into a pedestrian-friendly party space from 5pm to 10pm with DJs, dancing and drag.
The festival is part of the City of Sydney's Art & About program. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the three-day event forms part of the City's broader vision to revitalise Oxford Street as a thriving cultural and creative precinct.
"Great cities are shaped by great streets, and Oxford Street has always been one of Sydney's most important cultural destinations," Moore said. "While Oxford Street has experienced significant challenges in the past, the stars are aligning to see this beloved strip reach its potential."
Weekend exhibitions, performances, workshops and installations will pay tribute to Oxford Street's unique identity and the diverse communities that have shaped the precinct.
