Sydney petition: 6,500+ sign call for pet-friendly carriage trial on NSW trains and metro

An official NSW Parliament petition has gathered over 6,500 signatures calling for a two-year trial of a pet-friendly carriage on every Sydney train and metro service. Under NSW rules, 20,000 signatures can trigger a parliamentary debate; signing closes November 4.
Why it matters
An official parliamentary petition launched by Sydney dog lovers is gaining signatures fast: more than 6,500 people had signed as of October 9, calling for a trial of "pet-friendly carriages" on NSW trains and metro. Under NSW Parliament rules, 20,000 signatures can trigger a parliamentary debate; the petition closes on November 4.
What the petition asks
Titled "Trial a Pet-Friendly Carriage on Every NSW Train and Metro Service," the petition was started by Rosemary Lee, who runs a Sydney small-dog social club. It asks for one designated pet carriage per train or metro service; dogs to be leashed or in compliant pet carriers; standards for behaviour, hygiene and owner responsibility; protection for assistance dogs; removal of disruptive animals or owners; and a formal evaluation before any permanent rollout.
The petition argues the current ban is unfair to car-less residents — including apartment dwellers, seniors, low-income earners and some people with disabilities — who struggle to take pets to the vet or outdoors. Current rules: Sydney trains and NSW TrainLink do not allow pets (assistance and police dogs only); buses and ferries may carry crated pets with the driver's consent. The ABC covered the petition.
