· N GLOBE

The City of Sydney plans more than 20 special entertainment precincts to boost live music and late-night dining, with about 5,000 businesses expected to benefit; public comment is open until November 26.

Why it matters

This is a key step in Sydney's post-pandemic night-time economy revival: instead of designating one or two streets, the council would spread special entertainment precincts across many core districts, using locally tailored sound management and trading hours to unlock live music and late-night dining.

Full report

On October 15, the City of Sydney unveiled plans to create more than 20 special entertainment precincts, with about 5,000 businesses expected to benefit. The proposal is open for public comment until November 26.

Proposed areas include Central Sydney from Central station to The Rocks, including Haymarket, YCK and the Ivy precinct on George Street; the Oxford Street precinct including Crown and Bourke streets; and Surry Hills along Crown and Elizabeth streets. Precinct-specific measures, trading hours and sound controls are designed to provide greater certainty for businesses, residents and visitors.

The NSW Government also offers incentives for eligible venues inside precincts, including extended trading hours and liquor licence fee discounts. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said special entertainment precincts are about supporting the live music, cultural and hospitality venues that make Sydney a global city, while ensuring residents continue to enjoy a high quality of life.
