The Sydney Swans confirmed on November 4 that forward Tom Papley returned a preliminary positive indication in a random drug test during a NSW Police roadside licence check on November 2; a second sample is being analysed, with results expected to take at least four weeks. He was also issued a court attendance notice for driving while his licence was suspended over an unpaid parking fine.

The Sydney Swans confirmed in a statement on November 4 that forward Tom Papley returned a preliminary positive indication in a random drug test during a roadside licence check by NSW Police on Monday, November 2. A second sample has been taken for analysis, with results expected to take at least four weeks, the club said. Papley immediately advised the club of the matter, and the club subsequently informed the AFL.

Two separate matters

The two elements of the case should be kept apart: the court attendance notice relates to driving while suspended — Papley's licence was suspended due to non-payment of a parking fine. The drug test, by contrast, has so far produced only a preliminary positive indication; the second sample's laboratory result is still pending and the police process is ongoing, so the preliminary result should not be treated as a final finding or a drug-driving conviction.

According to the NSW Police account reported in the media, the preliminary test indicated positive for methylamphetamine. The club said it will make no further comment pending the outcome of the police process. Papley, 30, is a senior forward for the Swans; what happens next depends on the second sample's result and any further police decision.

For the Swans, this is another off-field headache in the off-season, after several players were investigated or suspended over earlier off-field incidents. The club's statement did not mention any internal sanction for Papley, saying only that it had informed the league as required.
