Sydney–Perth fibre route goes live as longest link in Telstra's $1.8bn Aura Network

· N GLOBE

Telstra activated the Perth–Sydney route of its Aura Network on October 7 — the longest link in the national fibre network and a milestone in its $1.8bn digital infrastructure investment.

Why it matters

Australian telecom giant Telstra activated the Perth–Sydney route of its Aura Network on October 7, 2026 — the longest route in its national intercity fibre network. The link strengthens Australia's east-west digital corridor, connecting the cloud, data-centre and business hubs of the eastern states to Perth and the western global subsea cable networks. It is a key milestone in Telstra's broader $1.8 billion investment in Australia's digital infrastructure.

Network scale

The Aura Network (previously known as the Intercity Fibre Network) now has 9,000 kilometres built out of a planned 14,000. Telstra says the network is designed to deliver up to 35 times more fibre capacity per path than conventional routes, and up to 6.3 times greater terabits-per-second capacity than existing industry-standard architecture. The route is built with two separate fibre pathways — one for express traffic and another with on/off ramps to support connectivity for regional Australia.

Economic significance

Research commissioned by Telstra from Oxford Economics found that Western Australia's digital economy could grow from $16.8 billion in FY25 to about $89.1 billion by FY40 under an accelerated digital-adoption scenario, with high-capacity connectivity a key enabler of growth across mining, defence and professional and financial services.
