Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) welcomes its first passenger flights on Sunday, October 25: Jetstar flies first to the Gold Coast, Air New Zealand starts Auckland on Oct. 26, and Singapore Airlines — the airport's first international carrier — launches daily Singapore flights on Nov. 23. The new airport has no curfew and runs 24 hours.

Why it matters

Sydney's long-awaited second airport finally opens: Western Sydney International takes its first passengers on October 25 — and unlike Kingsford Smith, it has no curfew and can operate around the clock. Singapore Airlines immediately announced daily flights from November 23, becoming the airport's first international carrier; counting its Changi–Kingsford Smith services, SIA will fly five times a day between Singapore and Sydney.

Full report

The airport, named after aviation pioneer Nancy-Bird Walton, sits at Luddenham in Sydney's west. The Australian Government expects it to handle up to 10 million passengers a year. The first flight is a Jetstar A320 to the Gold Coast at 11am on October 25; Jetstar will also fly up to 14 times a week to Melbourne, four to the Gold Coast and three to Brisbane. Air New Zealand starts Auckland flights on October 26, and Qantas follows from March 28, 2027.

SIA's Western Sydney schedule: SQ261 leaves Singapore at 11:30am daily and lands at Western Sydney at 10:20pm; SQ262 departs Western Sydney at 11:55pm and reaches Singapore at 5:15am the next day. Timings are subject to regulatory approval. SIA is selling early-bird fares from Australia until October 29.

Getting there: a free shuttle runs to St Marys interchange every 30 minutes (4:30am to midnight Sunday–Thursday, to 1am Friday–Saturday); public buses run every 30 minutes from 5am to 10pm to Penrith, Leppington, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Mount Druitt. The airport has more than 6,000 parking spaces and is reached by the toll-free M12 motorway. A 23-km Sydney Metro line to St Marys, a 15-minute trip, is due in 2027.
