Taiwan's Hsinchu County government confirmed on Thursday that two employees previously reported missing have been found dead after a fire at Panasonic's Hukou plant, with five others injured. The plant makes high-end laminate materials used in AI servers, and supply chain exposure is under scrutiny.

Taiwan's Hsinchu County government confirmed on Thursday (November 5) that two employees previously reported missing have been found dead after a fire at Panasonic's Hukou plant early on Wednesday, with five others injured and taken to hospital. The fire broke out at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday at a five-storey factory in Hukou Township, Hsinchu County, and an explosion occurred; Panasonic confirmed the explosion and said it was investigating the details and the cause. Five injured, including three Taiwanese and two Vietnamese workers

Reuters reported that the Hsinchu County government said on Thursday that the two people previously treated as missing had been confirmed dead; the county said on Wednesday that five people were injured in the fire. According to Taiwanese media, the five injured workers included three Taiwanese and two Vietnamese nationals, all taken to hospital. The cause of the fire and the extent of property damage remain under investigation, and Panasonic said it was investigating the details and the cause of the accident.

High-end laminate supply in focus

The plant belongs to Panasonic Industrial Devices Materials Taiwan and produces MEGTRON high-end copper clad laminate materials for printed circuit boards used in computers, electronic devices and AI servers. Industry estimates put the site's share of Panasonic's global MEGTRON capacity at around 20 percent; supply chain sources estimate it could represent roughly 4 percent of the relevant global high-end laminate market, an estimate of potential exposure rather than confirmed lost output.

Strong AI server demand puts disruption under watch

Demand is strong for low-loss materials used in AI servers, data centres and high-speed switches. A prolonged interruption could increase pressure on customer inventories, and other laminate makers may receive inquiries, though replacement supply depends on available capacity and customer qualification. The immediate focus is on Panasonic's delivery arrangements and the extent of the production disruption.
