'Light & Magic' opens today: Tate Modern tells the birth of art photography

Tate Modern's major exhibition 'Light & Magic: The Birth of Art Photography' opens Oct. 14, 2026 and runs through Feb. 21, 2027 — the first large-scale show to present pictorialism (1880s–1960s) as a global movement, with 200+ rare vintage prints by 80+ artists.
Why it matters
This is the first major exhibition to treat pictorialist photography as a global movement — answering a fundamental question: how did photography become an art form rather than a technique? With 200+ vintage prints spanning Seoul, Sydney, New York, Cape Town, Brazil and Singapore, it tells a genuinely world history of photography, not just a Western narrative.
Full report
'Light & Magic: The Birth of Art Photography' opens on October 14 at Tate Modern, Bankside, in the Eyal Ofer Galleries, and runs through February 21, 2027. The exhibition is open daily 10:00–18:00, extending to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; admission is £20, free for members.
The show brings together more than 200 rare vintage prints by over 80 artists, drawn from Seoul, Sydney, New York, Cape Town, Brazil, Singapore and beyond; many works are shown for the first time, including holdings from the V&A's Royal Photographic Society collection such as Long Chin-San's 'Riverside Spring' (1942).
Curated by Charmaine Toh (Acting Head of Curatorial) and Genevieve Barton (Assistant Curator), the exhibition also presents early darkroom experimental processes, a working darkroom demonstration, and documents of the international network of photographic societies — including London's RPS, the Shanghai Photographic Society (光社), Korea's New Line Group and the Photographic Society of Singapore.
