Toronto mayoral race: Bradford pledges earlier subway opening on marathon day

· N GLOBE

Mayoral candidate Brad Bradford promised on Sunday that, if elected, the subway would open two hours earlier on marathon day, plus signal priority for the whole streetcar network; Chow pushed back.

Why it matters

Toronto's mayoral race has put transit on the centre stage. Mayoral candidate Brad Bradford announced on Sunday (Oct. 18) that, if elected mayor, he would open the city's subway system two hours earlier on the day of the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. This weekend's race began at 8 a.m. — the same time regular subway service starts — and drew more than 31,000 runners from over 75 countries.

Full report

Bradford accused Mayor Olivia Chow of having a "pattern" of failing to properly plan transit service around major events; Chow's camp fired back, rejecting his claim. On the same day, Bradford also pitched transit-signal priority and light pre-emption for the entire TTC streetcar network, so streetcars stop getting stuck at red lights and run faster and more reliably.

Chow is not buying the pitch, arguing it is not workable. With the mayoral race heating up, transit has become one of the main battlegrounds between the two camps.
