Toronto Crypto Kidnapping Probe: 7 Charged, Including 3 Canadian Armed Forces Members

· N GLOBE

Toronto police announced that seven people, including three members of the Canadian Armed Forces, face 82 charges in a cryptocurrency-motivated kidnapping investigation; searches turned up four firearms (two with 3D-printed components), two silencers, 10 overcapacity magazines and more than 2,700 rounds of ammunition.

Why it matters

This is a violent kidnapping targeting a cryptocurrency holder that has drawn in serving military personnel — and police say roughly 2,500 rounds of ammunition and five magazines were allegedly stolen from the Canadian Armed Forces. Toronto police chief Myron Demkiw put it plainly: "No one is above the law."

The case

At a news conference on Wednesday, October 14, Toronto police announced that seven men face 82 charges connected to a kidnapping on July 25. Police allege the victim was abducted at gunpoint near Finch Avenue and Bayview Avenue, handcuffed and assaulted as suspects tried to access his cryptocurrency assets. The victim was later released and threatened not to contact police.

The accused

All three military accused are Canadian Armed Forces reservists: Talarambage Fernando, 22, and James Moreau, 29, of the 7 Toronto Regiment, arrested August 11; and Jack Miley, 24, of Toronto and a different regiment, arrested September 24 on seven charges including kidnapping for ransom with a firearm, forcible confinement and firearm offences. Four civilians were also arrested in the same investigation. All accused have only been charged, not convicted.

Weapons and drugs seized

Searches across the Greater Toronto Area uncovered four firearms (two with 3D-printed components), two silencers, 10 overcapacity magazines, methamphetamine, cocaine and more than 2,700 rounds of ammunition, roughly half of them blanks. Investigators allege that about 2,500 rounds and five magazines were stolen from the Canadian Armed Forces. The investigation is ongoing. Police said the accused's military training "creates a lot of concern for not only our community, but our officers."
