Toronto FC stuns CF Montréal 2-1 in Canadian Classique with two stoppage-time goals

MLS, Oct. 10: Trailing 1-0 at the end of regulation at BMO Field, Toronto FC flipped the Canadian Classique with stoppage-time strikes from Lewis Morgan (90+3') and Djordje Mihailovic (90+5') to beat CF Montréal 2-1, extending its unbeaten run against its arch-rivals to six matches.
Why it matters
Toronto FC produced a stunning late comeback at BMO Field on Saturday: trailing 0-1 to CF Montréal at the end of 90 minutes, the Reds struck twice in second-half stoppage time — substitute Lewis Morgan levelled in the 93rd minute and Djordje Mihailovic fired the winner in the 95th, about two minutes apart. Head coach Robin Fraser's second-half substitutions proved decisive.
Montréal had taken the lead through Daniel Rios in the 52nd minute. Toronto lost starting goalkeeper Luka Gavran to a leg injury in the 23rd minute, forcing 37-year-old backup William Yarbrough into action — his first appearance for Toronto and his first match since Sept. 21, 2024. Mihailovic (61st minute) and Morgan (82nd) came off the bench to score both goals.
Morgan's equalizer, assisted by Niklas Dorsch, was his first goal for Toronto since joining from San Diego FC last month; Theo Corbeanu provided the assist for the winner. Mihailovic, a former Montréal player (2021-22), said after the match: "Now I've scored on both sides of this derby."
The victory extends Toronto's unbeaten run against Montréal in MLS regular-season play to six matches (4 wins, 2 draws, dating to May 18, 2024). Toronto now sits at 7-10-11, while Montréal is 6-16-6. Up next: Toronto hosts Orlando City SC on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. ET at BMO Field.
