Toronto launches 2026 Fire Prevention Week: "Safe Charging Is a Superpower"

· N GLOBE

Toronto Fire Services announced Fire Prevention Week 2026, October 4 to 10, with this year's theme focused on safe charging of lithium-ion batteries in phones, e-bikes and other devices.

Why it matters

Lithium-ion batteries power the devices we use every day, from smartphones and tablets to e-bikes and e-scooters. They are generally safe when used properly, but damaged, defective or improperly charged batteries can pose a serious fire risk. Fire Prevention Week arrives as residents settle into autumn routines with heavier indoor charging.

Full report

Toronto Fire Services announced on October 4 that Fire Prevention Week 2026 runs from Sunday, October 4, through Saturday, October 10. This year's theme, "Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on preventing lithium-ion battery fires through simple charging habits.

The fire service advises residents to: use only the battery, charger and charging cord provided by or approved for the device manufacturer; follow the manufacturer's instructions for use, charging and storage; replace batteries, devices or charging equipment that are damaged, swollen, leaking, defective or overheating; charge devices on a hard, flat surface away from combustible materials; unplug devices once fully charged; and never charge devices while sleeping or away from home.
