Why it matters
The City of Toronto announced on Oct 9, 2026, a “Kids Vote Weekend” inviting children under 18 to experience voting first-hand by choosing Toronto's 2027 Tree of the Year. The initiative blends civic education with urban greening, landing just ahead of the Oct 26 municipal election.
The event
Voting runs Saturday, Oct 10 through Sunday, Oct 11, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, at all 50 designated advance voting locations across Toronto.
The five contenders are Basswood, Paper Birch, Red Oak, Sugar Maple and White Pine. The winning species, chosen by the young voters, will be revealed after the municipal election on Oct 26, 2026, and celebrated throughout 2027 with special plantings, tree sapling giveaways and other activities.
The city says the initiative is designed to help children and youth learn about local democracy, elections and the electoral process. Details and educational resources are at toronto.ca/KidsVote.
