Full report

A coroner's inquest opened today in Toronto to examine the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet. Presided over by Dr. David Cameron, the inquest is expected to last 14 days, with 15 witnesses set to testify.

Korchinski-Paquet, 29, was of Ukrainian, Black and Indigenous ancestry. On May 27, 2020, police responded to a family dispute call at her apartment, and she fell from a 24th-floor balcony.

Ontario's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, later cleared Toronto police of wrongdoing, finding she was trying to move from her apartment balcony to an adjacent one.

Her death came on the heels of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, spurring further protests and casting a spotlight on how police interact with people experiencing mental health crises. On the anniversary of her death this year, her parents and advocates called for coroner's inquest recommendations to be binding and implemented within a reasonable timeframe.
