On Saturday night at Ball Arena in Denver, Nylander's five points tied his career high; Matthews had two goals and two assists; Nick Blankenburg scored in his Leafs debut and Easton Cowan also scored. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice for the Avalanche (3-2-0).

Bobrovsky stopped 30 of 33 shots for his first win of the season. Coach Jim Hiller praised the response after a chaotic second period. Defenseman Chris Tanev left in the first period and did not return; John Tavares was absent for the birth of his son.

The Leafs visit the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday night.
