Former captain John Tavares is expected back tonight at home against the Montreal Canadiens after three weeks out with a lower-body injury, as the Leafs, losers of three of their last four, continue a crucial six-game homestand.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares is expected to return to the lineup tonight (Saturday, 7 November) as the Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens. According to David Alter of The Hockey News, all signs point to Tavares playing.

Back after three weeks out

Tavares has been sidelined with a lower-body injury since 15 October, suffered in an awkward collision with Buffalo Sabres forward Josh Norris. On his return, he could play on the wing for the first time.

His return comes at a much-needed moment: Toronto sits at 8-7-2 (18 points), seventh in the Atlantic Division, having lost three of its last four games while being outscored 15-12. The team is in the middle of a six-game homestand that could define the rest of its season.

A hot opponent

Tonight's opponent, the Montreal Canadiens, are in strong form at 10-3-3, second in the Atlantic, 7-1-2 over their last 10 after beating Utah 5-4 in overtime on Thursday.

For Toronto, captain Auston Matthews leads the team with 26 points in 17 games, including 11 goals and a plus-9 rating. The Leafs are also missing Kirill Marchenko, on injured reserve until at least 17 November.
