The 348-bed Campus of Care in Toronto's West Don Lands reached grade level, with George Brown Polytechnic formally joining as a partner.

Why it matters

Toronto's aging population faces a chronic shortage of long-term care beds. Opening in 2028, this new facility adds 348 beds at once and co-locates care, diagnostics and education — a major quality-of-life project for the growing West Don Lands waterfront community.

Full report

The 348-bed Campus of Care — the Rekai Centre at Cherry Place in Toronto's West Don Lands — has officially reached grade, a major construction milestone. The Rekai Centres, Minister of Long Term Care Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Ward 13 Councillor Chris Moise, and representatives from the Building Ontario Fund, Waterfront Toronto, George Brown Polytechnic, LifeLabs and builder Multiplex gathered Thursday afternoon at the 55 Eastern Avenue site to mark the occasion.

The event also formalized the partnership with George Brown Polytechnic, which will anchor the facility's Campus of Care with an integrated Education Centre, giving healthcare students the chance to learn inside an active long-term care environment.

LifeLabs will operate an on-site Patient Service Centre on the ground floor, open to everyone, bringing laboratory and diagnostic support together with long-term care for residents and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Expected to open in 2028, the facility will include 96 beds for people living with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, 22 beds in the Rainbow Wing serving members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and their allies, and an Infection Control Zone.
